I don't think I can pinpoint 'favourite' christian songs. For me, significant songs tend to be attached to significant moments, so I thought I might share those!
1. I Surrender - Geoff Bullock
In my last year of high school, I went away with a bunch of mates on a church camp and being a musician, I was drafted in to help with the music for the services. So on January 21st 1994, as we 'led' this song I realised I needed to put down my bass guitar and surrender myself to Christ's lordship. This song helped me express that with my both mind and heart - "Everything I am, and ever hope to be, I surrender to You."
2. Be Thou My Vision - Eleanor Henrietta Hull Mary Elizabeth Byrne
This was one of the songs we sang at our wedding. We see in the Bible that God often uses songs to help us recall significant moment, truths or promises. For me, each time I sing this song now, it reminds me to renew this prayer again for our marriage and life.
3. How Great Is Our God - Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves
I had the privilege of being involved with music at a few conferences in Europe last year, and over a few weeks, I think we sang this song in Croatian, German, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese and Ukrainian and I might have forgotten some! Music has a great way of letting us unite in what we're proclaiming - even across language barriers. Imagine what it will be like singing Christ's praises with every nation, tribe, people and language!
4. In Christ Alone - Stuart Townend, Keith Getty
This takes me back to a moment last year where I was with 600 music pastors and leaders singing this song together to a simple piano accompaniment - I was moved to tears. But not so much because of how it sounded (though it did sound amazing!) but because of the weight of the encouragement of brothers and sisters around me wholeheartedly declaring their hope and trust in Christ. It was a vivid embodiment of Colossians 3:16 - the message of Christ was dwelling richly among us as we taught and admonished one another with all wisdom as we sang to God with gratitude in our hearts.
5. Rejoice - Dustin Kensrue, Stuart Townend
I think the third verse and chorus of this song is so helpful - we constantly need this help to worship God in all seasons and remember that God hears both our celebrations from the mountain tops and our cries from the depths of the valley. And we need to sing these kinds of songs together for one another - in any gathering, theres going to be people who need to hear and draw hope and encouragement from those around them.
I searched YouTube for the "best advice for men". The top-ranking videos could be sorted into 3 categories:
If I’d watched these videos I could have discovered:
By looking at this list, you'd think that there is no greater goal for men than to look good, and then successfully start and end relationships with women.
The ambitions the world serves up to us as men are so small, so superficial, so insignificant. Look better. Live longer. Get fitter. Make more. Do less.
Brothers, God has so much more for us than this! He has a vision for our lives that is infinitely greater than anything the world can set before us! And this is why men have been gathering in Katoomba and now also in Sydney for 20 years.
Thousands of men have made it their priority to meet together and hear from God. To lift their eyes off the mediocre and towards the magnificent! To look to Jesus, and be the men that God made us to be. And through this ministry, God has done great things for the sake of His name.
And today, is the need for this gathering any less than it was 20 years ago? Not at all! More than ever, Australia needs men who consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, our Lord (Phil 3:8).
Our families, our churches, our workplaces and communities need these men.
Men who know we are weak, but lean on the One who is strong.
Men who are merciful and meek.
Men who love sacrificially and give generously.
Men who listen more than we speak.
Men who encourage more than we find fault.
Men who are followers before we leaders.
Men who think of ourselves less, and others more.
Men who pray before we plan.
Men who know God and live to please him.
Can you imagine the impact on our nation as men refuse to settle for what the world is selling, and instead, strive to be the men who God has created us to be?

When we come to God in prayer, we will never hear Him say:

I can't, but I can suggest some other names.
You'll have to speak with my assistant.
You need to make an appointment.
We'll need to reschedule.
You'll need to be quick.
I can't right now.
I'm too busy.
He is always ready and waiting, day or night, for as long as we need, as often as we need. God’s willingness to listen to His children is simply wonderful.
If you’re a man, come to BASECAMP Mountains next month and hear Mal Gill encourage and equip us to be men who pray.
